Second-half goals from Ryan Christie and Che Adams finally earned Scotland a 2-0 victory over Gibraltar in their penultimate game before heading to Euro 2024. Steve Clarke’s side registered 25 shots over the course of the 90 minutes in Portugal, but only five of them were on target. The result means they have picked up their first international victory since a win over Cyprus back in September.
Scotland finally ended their long winless run as they beat minnows Gibraltar 2-0 in an international friendly.
Steve Clarke’s side had not tasted victory in seven games, dating back to September.
But they put in a dominant display in Portugal, as goals from Ryan Christie and Che Adams after half-time secured a much-needed success at the Estadio Do Algarve.
The away team were on top from the first whistle, but failed to break the deadlock in a first half in which they registered 20 shots.
That perhaps came as no surprise for a team who had failed to net in three of their previous six outings, and have also been hit by the blow of losing striker Lyndon Dykes to an ankle injury, which he picked up in training.
The QPR forward will miss Euro 2024 as a result, and Clarke is scrambling around to find a winning formula in his absence.
Christie eventually found a way through with 58 minutes on the clock, grabbing his first international goal in nearly two years when smashing home after Andy Robertson’s cross was not dealt with and fell his way in the box.
And before full-time, substitute Adams made the scoreline look somewhat more comfortable as he met John McGinn’s ball on the volley and found the back of the net.
The win was not quite as emphatic as the country’s two previous meetings, which Scotland won 6-1 and 6-0 respectively back in 2015.
The Tartan Army have one more friendly ahead of Euro 2024, which is against Finland at Hampden Park on Friday.
They then fly to Germany to take on the hosts in the opening game of the tournament on June 14.
