A week after the other clubs had finished their Serie A campaign, Atalanta hosted Fiorentina in Bergamo. Both sides had played in European finals, with contrasting fortunes, and it was the beaten UEFA Europa Conference League finalists Fiorentina who emerged victorious, winning 3-2 thanks to Andrea Belotti’s double. Atalanta finish the season in fourth and Fiorentina eighth.
Fiorentina won 3-2 at Atalanta in their postponed Serie A clash to finally end their seasons, with Andrea Belotti scoring twice for the away side.
The two sides met one week after the conclusion of the campaign for every other side, and for Atalanta it represented the chance to move into third place above Juventus. Any result for Fiorentina would have kept them in eighth spot.
The game was delayed when the original fixture in March was postponed after Fiorentina director Joe Barone suffered a fatal heart attack before kick-off.
Striker Andrea Belotti put the away side ahead after just six minutes with a well-placed glancing header.
Ademola Lookman levelled six minutes later but that joy was short-lived for the home side as Nicolas Gonzalez put Fiorentina back in front on 19 minutes as he watched a cross fall onto his foot for a volleyed strike.
Giorgio Scalvini made it 2-2 just after the half-hour mark, but Fiorentina had the final say when Belotti pounced on a rebound to finish from close range in first-half injury time.
For Atalanta, they have enjoyed an outstanding season as they beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 to win the UEFA Europa League, so were already assured of UEFA Champions League football for the 2024/25 season, and they finished in fourth.
Fiorentina, however, had suffered a disappointment as they lost to Olympiacos in the UEFA Europa Conference League final. As a result of Atalanta’s Europa triumph, and European spots trickling down the league, the Florence side are back in the Conference League for next season.
