TNT Sports expert Raphael Honigsten has called Bayern Munich’s season “horrific” after the 33-time Bundesliga champions’ title defence was ended by Bayer Leverkusen. Thomas Tuchel’s side had won the German top division 11 times consecutively, but Leverkusen’s 5-0 win over Werder Bremen sealed a maiden crown for Xabi Alonso’s Werkself, as they lead the table by an unassailable 16 points.Raphael Honigstein has labelled Bayern Munich’s campaign as “horrific” after the defending Bundesliga champions lost out on a 12th straight title to Bayer Leverkusen.
Leverkusen clinched the trophy with a 5-0 win over Werder Bremen on Sunday to leave them an unassailable 16 points clear at the summit of Germany’s top tier.
The UEFA Champions League is the only piece of silverware that Bayern are able to win now, after they were stunned earlier in the campaign by 3. Liga side Saarbrucken in the second round of the DFB-Pokal.Speaking to TNT Sports ahead of die Rekordmeister’s UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg against Arsenal – which is live on TNT Sports and discovery+ – Honigstein said that big changes were needed across all areas to get the 33-time Bundesliga winners back dominating once more.“By Bayern’s standards, it’s been a horrific season,” Honigstein said.
“If you don’t win the Bundesliga, even though it would have been the 12th time in a row, it’s a disaster. What this team needed was a refresh. Now that the Bundesliga has gone to somebody else, it made everybody wake up and realise that one or two changes or just changing the manager is not going to be enough.
“There’s a big overhaul coming in the summer and Bayern are probably making the changes that they perhaps should have made a couple of years ago. Just to freshen things up; to have players that are a bit more hungry and not spoiled after winning all these titles, winning with their hands in their pockets.”
