DOMINICAN REPUBLIC V SPAIN – OLYMPIC FOOTBALL RECAP

Jul 28, 2024

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC 1-3 SPAIN
The referee blows his whistle and it’s here in Bordeaux. Spain advanced to the Olympic quarter-finals after winning their first two legs for the first time since 1992. The Dominican fought hard to equalize in the first half, but their captain was sent off, making things easy for Spain.

The Dominican is still trying to extend the stoppage time here. You can’t fault their effort as nobody expected them to score this afternoon, but in the end Spain got a deserved win.
90′ DOMINICAN REPUBLIC 1-3 SPAIN
At least eight minutes will be added. Most of that will be due to the lengthy VAR review of Spain’s third goal.
85′ DOMINICAN REPUBLIC 1-3 SPAIN
Spain went close again, this time hitting the post. They don’t need another goal, but they’re looking for it anyway and they continue to press the Dominican with just five minutes left in normal time.
82′ DOMINICAN REPUBLIC 1-3 SPAIN
Great chance by Diego Lopez who just came on. He times his run perfectly and shoots from the box, but the angle was tight and Boesl handled it well.
77′ DOMINICAN REPUBLIC 1-3 SPAIN
The shots are still coming from the Dominican who is getting frustrated on the score line. They had a great chance in this match after equalizing in the first half, but the red card changed everything. Substitutions are now being made by both sides, and fresh legs will surely benefit Spain even more.
70′ GOAL! DOMINICAN REPUBLIC 1-3 SPAIN
After an extremely long VAR check, Spain was awarded another goal. It was initially flagged for offside, but Gutierrez was just in the game and his easy shot was cleared. Of course, Spain is now out of sight.
65′ DOMINICAN REPUBLIC 1-2 SPAIN
Spain are cruising now just like they have been for most of this game. The extra man they have really hurts the Dominican and it’s hard to see them getting back into this one from here. As things stand, Spain are going to the quarter-finals.
55′ GOAL! DOMINICAN REPUBLIC 1-2 SPAIN
Spain regained their lead when Baena burst into the box and made no mistake firing the ball past the hapless keeper who was caught in a turnover.
50′ DOMINICAN REPUBLIC 1-1 SPAIN
Spain were dominant from the start of the second period and they are trying to get back in front. Let’s remember, though, this is how it was in the first half, but the Dominican Republic somehow managed to score a goal.
46′ DOMINICAN REPUBLIC 1-1 SPAIN
We’re back at it here in Bordeaux and Spain will be looking to take advantage of their extra man following a red card just before half-time.
HALF TIME
It’s half-time here in Bordeaux and it’s safe to say that there was no shortage of drama in this game. Fermin Lopez gave Spain a deserved lead and they were in complete control until Angel Montes De Oca equalised.
The red card shown by Dominican captain Edison Azcona just before half-time is likely to turn the match in Spain’s favor now.

45′ RED CARD! DOMINICAN REPUBLIC 1-1 SPAIN
Dominican captain Edison Azcona was sent off by the referee after sending off Pau Curbarsi following a foul. It’s stupid of Azcona to plead with the referee.

43′ DOMINICAN REPUBLIC 1-1 SPAIN
That goal gave the Dominican a huge boost of confidence and Spain will be glad of a break in a few minutes to ease the pressure in the final half.
38′ GOAL! DOMINICAN REPUBLIC 1-1 SPAIN
Wow! Out of nowhere, the Dominican Republic equalized. Angel Montes De Oca was alone in the box, which allowed him a completely free header that he timed to perfection. They were barely in it here, but they took their one chance and are in it again.
36′ DOMINICAN REPUBLIC 0-1 SPAIN

More of the same from Spain as the first half draws to a close here in Bordeaux. They were completely dominant and it wouldn’t be surprising if they got another goal before the break.
30′ DOMINICAN REPUBLIC 0-1 SPAIN
Another chance for Spain who almost doubled their lead in just six minutes. Abel Ruiz again, this time on the post, but he shot over the goal.
24′ GOAL! DOMINICAN REPUBLIC 0-1 SPAIN
It was coming. Spain lead through Fermin Lopez. We said he would be a danger and he proved why he was part of the 26-man squad for his country.
He got in front of the Dominican defender and easily slotted past Boesl to give his side the lead.
23′ DOMINICAN REPUBLIC 0-0 SPAIN
Spain are getting closer and are determined to open the scoring soon. Sergio Gomez found space on the edge of the box, but his shot was wide. It’s very one-sided right now and the Dominicans are hanging on.
17′ DOMINICAN REPUBLIC 0-0 SPAIN
A huge mistake by Boesl almost put Spain in front! He lost the ball in his own box and it fell to Abel Ruiz, but his shot from a tight angle did not faze him.
12′ DOMINICAN REPUBLIC 0-0 SPAIN
A great chance for Spain! Juan Miranda delivers a perfect ball into the box but it’s collected well by goalkeeper Boesl.
8′ DOMINICAN REPUBLIC 0-0 SPAIN
Alex Baena and Fermin Lopez are the two Spanish players to watch out for this afternoon. They were part of the Euro 2024 winning side earlier this month and are hoping to help guide their country to gold.
If the Dominican are to get anything out of this then they need to contain those two.
4′ DOMINICAN REPUBLIC 0-0 SPAIN
A strong start from Spain who are pressing their opponents high in the hope of clinching an early lead. The Dominican Republic are holding on for now though.
1′ DOMINICAN REPUBLIC 0-0 SPAIN
We’re underway here at the Bordeaux Stadium and it will be interesting to see how this youthful Spanish side approach this game that they are widely expected to win.
