Gareth Southgate has stepped down as England coach after almost eight years at the helm. The 53-year-old made the decision following his side’s Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain. Southgate’s contract was due to expire in December this year, but he left the role that led the Three Lions to a second consecutive European Championship final. Southgate left his position as England’s third longest-serving manager, having taken charge of 102 matches and won 61, remaining one of the country’s most successful managers.
He led England to the Euro 2024 final, after taking the side on his first appearance three years earlier, when they lost to Italy at the postponed Euro 2020. It was England’s first European Championship final and their first major final since winning the 1966 World Cup. .
Southgate’s contract was due to expire in December this year, admitting to German publication Bild in June that the tournament in Germany was likely to be his last chance for silverware in charge of the national team.
Southgate released a statement on Tuesday morning in which he paid tribute to the players, staff and fans who supported him and England during his eight-year tenure.
“As a proud Englishman, it has been the honor of my life to play for England and to manage England. It meant everything to me and I did my best,” said the 53-year-old.
