THIAGO ALCANTARA RETIRES FROM PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL

Jul 09, 2024

Until the age of 33, Thiago Alcantara invested time in a career that brought him many trophies. The former Spain international suffered a series of injuries during his four seasons at Liverpool. Thiago won a host of team and individual honors during his 15-year career, including seven consecutive Bundesliga titles, two UEFA Champions League wins and the FA Cup.

He wrote: “I will always be ready to give back what I have been given and I am grateful for the time I have enjoyed.

“Thank you, football.” And to everyone who accompanied me and made me a better player and person along the way. I’ll see you soon.”
Thiago made the decision to retire after another injury-plagued season on Merseyside in which he played just six minutes as a substitute in Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat at Arsenal in February.
Hip problems limited his third season with the Reds, who he joined in the summer of 2020.

Despite failing to win the Premier League in England, Thiago enjoyed an eight-year spell of back-to-back league titles, starting with his final season at Barcelona in 2012/13.
He played 100 games for boyhood club Barça and during that time won four La Liga titles and was part of the squad that achieved UEFA Champions League success under Pep Guardiola during the 2010/11 season.
However, he left to move to Germany in search of more playing time and played a key role in winning seven Bundesliga titles for Bayern Munich, as well as another Champions League, this time during the 2019-20 season.

Thiago played 235 games for Bayern, scoring 31 goals and 37 assists.
With Liverpool, the Italian-born Spaniard achieved a League Cup and FA Cup double under Jurgen Klopp in the 2021/22 season.
He was also named in the PFA Team of the Year as the Reds reached the Champions League final in the same campaign, but lost 1-0 to Real Madrid with Thiago starting on the bench.
He was not part of the Spanish team that won the European Championship in 2012, but won the Under-21 Championship twice, in 2011 and 2013.
He made a total of 46 appearances for Spain’s senior team between 2011 and 2021, scoring two goals and playing regularly alongside his country’s golden generation of midfielders such as Xavi, Andres Iniesta and David Silva.
