VAR will not be revoked

Jun 07, 2024

Although Wolves proposed that VAR be abolished, they still did not get the necessary 14 votes in favour. By voting, it was decided not to abolish VAR.

Premier League clubs voted against scrapping VAR at their annual general meeting on Thursday morning. Although 14 votes were necessary, as many as 20 clubs voted not to abolish this screening system. “As part of ongoing work to improve VAR, six key areas have been focused on in discussions with clubs:
“1) Maintaining a high threshold for VAR intervention to provide greater consistency and fewer interruptions to play.
“2) Reduction of delay in the game, primarily through the introduction of semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) and preserved high threshold for VAR intervention.
“3) Enhancing the fan experience through reduced delays, in-stadium referee announcements following a change of decision following VAR and, where possible, an improved offering of replays on the big screen to include all VAR interventions.”
“4) Work with PGMOL to implement more robust VAR training to improve consistency, including an emphasis on process speed while maintaining accuracy.”
“5) Increasing transparency and communication around VAR – including increased communication from the Premier League Match Center and through broadcast programs such as Match Officials Mic’d Up.”
“6) Delivery of a VAR communications campaign for fans and stakeholders, which will seek to further clarify VAR’s role in the game to participants and supporters.
“It was confirmed in April that semi-automated offside technology will be introduced in autumn 2024.

The Wolves were the only team that voted for the repeal, so 19 -1 vote.

It was determined that there will be improvements within VAR.

Reacting to the vote, a statement from Wolves said: “Whilst we are disappointed with the outcome of the vote on the future of VAR at today’s annual general meeting, we acknowledge and accept the decision taken by our fellow clubs and are confident that the Premier League will take the concerns of clubs and supporters seriously.” .”
