Baskonia can get their EuroLeague license suspended

May 07, 2024

If Baskonia finish the ACB regular season in 10th place, a clause exists in the EuroLeague Bylaws that allows their license to be suspended due to insufficient domestic league performance. Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz are having a rough season domestically. It might have repercussions in the EuroLeague.

The Basques are currently 9th in the Spanish Liga Endesa (ACB). If they finish the season in 10th place, an unlikely scenario might unfold in the EuroLeague.

Namely, the EuroLeague has a clause in the competition’s bylaws that allows the league to suspend a club’s license if at least one of eight reasons is being met. One of them – insufficient performance in the domestic league.

Article 6, and in particular, section 6.1.4, of EuroLeague Bylaws states the club’s license might get canceled or suspended if:

If, in the season that has just finished, the Club has ranked among the clubs placed in the bottom half of the Domestic Championship final standings. For the purposes of this article, if the Domestic Championship has an odd number of teams, the bottom half includes half plus 0.5.

With 18 teams in the ACB competition, Baskonia are currently in 9th place with two games left in the regular season. The 10th-placed Joventut Badalona are two games behind. However, they have won both games against Baskonia in the ACB and have a head-to-head advantage in case both teams reach the same number of wins in the regular season.

However, it is highly unlikely Baskonia might face any kind of punishment if they happen to finish the ACB regular season in 10th place.
